The C3PO Project

In this initiative of The Citizen Science Lab, Black or African American High School students will learn how to work with 3D printers to print cells, with the ultimate goal of learning how to 3D print organs!

By making artificial organs, scientists are able to solve a lot of the problems that come with traditional organ replacements. For instance, if you can print a new organ with your own cells, your body is much less likely to reject the implant, saving time, money, and health! This is a relatively new field, and your participants will learn skills that they can use for future careers.

There are two main parts of The C3PO Project. The first part is learning how to use 3D printers, including maintenance, modification, design, and printing itself. The second part will focus on growing, maintaining, and working with microbial cultures that we will eventually use as our “raw materials” for printing.

Skills Learned:

  • Technical Design and Troubleshooting
  • 3D Printing
  • 3D Printer Modification
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Tissue Culture
  • Laboratory Sanitation
  • Tool Usage
